Introduction :-

Sericulture is one of the Important Agro-based commercialcrops. Sericulture Provides Employment for various categories and Improves the economic conditions of Rural People Sericulture involves three important activities : namely

· Growing mulberry, the Food plant - An Agricultural based activity

· Silk worm Rearing and Producing Cocoons – It is an Art

· Silk Reeling activity - an Industrial Activity

The Climate and soil conditions of Tumakuru District are very Suitable for Sericulture. Sericulture can be Practiced all through the year and Cocoons can be Produced. Approximately on an average, one Acre of Mulberry under Irrigation condition can provide Employment for about 5 Members through out the year.Tumakuru District is unique in Sericulture as it is producing both the Seed cocoons i.e Pure Mysore Race and Bivoltine Seed Cocoons required for Silk warm seed production.

Effective utilization of MGNREGA & ATMA for Sericulture Development

Ultimately the Department aims at extension of Sericulture in the district and providing Job opportunities and making the Rural People Economically Self Dependent

Major Achievements in the Department: The District has unique place in Sericulture Department, Because both Pure Mysore Race and Pure Bivoltine Seed cocoons required for production of silk worm Seeds are being produced here and Supplied to the Seed Producers of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu With the introduction of V1 variety of mulberry and CSR Silk worm race and the Assistance Provided by the government, The Production and Productivity of cocoons has increased considerably , The present average yield of cocoons is 68.58 kgs per 100 Dfls.
