Tumakuru district has abundant inland water resources giving a wide scope for fisheries activities. Fisheries activity is helping people in various aspects.

PROGRAMMES & SCHEMES OF THE DEPARTMENT
Fishery development programmes are being undertaken by Zill panchyat, through State & District sector programmes, Central schemes and centrally sponsored schemes.
SCHEMES OF THE DEPARTMENT :- ZP Sector
- Assistance for development of Inland fisheries
- Assistance for development of Inland fisheries: S C P and T S P Programmes
- Inland fisheries: Assistance for development of fisheries in wells and ponds(private small water bodies)
- Construction of fish markets and Assistance for fish marketing (Subsidy for purchase of Bicycles and Mopeds)
- Exhibition and Training
- Construction of fisheries buildings and creation and maintenance of fisheries facilities.
State Sector:-
- Mathsyashraya:- Subsidy to houseless fishermen for construction of houses( Rs. 1.20 lakhs for General fishermen and Rs.1.50 lakhs for S C/S T fishermen)
- Mathsyashraya:- (S C P/T S P)
- Subsidy for purchase of fishery requisties.
- Subsidy for purchase of fibre glass coracles.
- Assistance for purchase of fish seed
TALUK PANCHAYATH SCHEMES:-
Under SCP and TSP programmes fishery requisties are distributed free of cost to the SC/ST fishermen.
DEPARTMENT STATSTICS AT GLANCE :-
The District has 401 Departmental tanks(>40 Ha. act) with WSA of 31373.39 Ha.1319 G P tanks (<40 Ha. act), with WSA of 3129 Ha. besides 4 reserviors contributing to WSA of 3798 Ha. Fishermen population of the District is estimated to be around 21800 There are 25 Fisheries Co-operative societies of which 23 are active in fisheries. 8 nurseries in defferent Taulkas of the District have the capacity to supply 25 lakhs per annum. The stocking potential of the District is 250 lakhs seeds per annum. Targetted fish production is 17000-18000 M T fish per annum.
A revenue of Rs.1.30 Crore is revenue remetted to Government from disposal of fishery rights of 224 Departmental tanks during 2016-17.

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT
1) Special emphasis to SCP and TSP group for taking up fisheries activities by providing
subsidy for fish pond construction.
2) Secondly as marketing aid, emphasis to SCP and TSP group for taking up fisheries
activities by providing subsidy for purchase 4 wheeler vehicle.
3) Reaching out major farmers by encouraging fisheries activity by giving free fish seed to
culture in small tanks and wells.
4) Shifting from traditional coracle to fiber glass coracle for fishing and also reducing
accidental damage while fishing.
5) Subsidy for mobile canteen unit under NFDB assistance.
